This Kennedy family tree charts 144 members of America's best-known political family across five generations, beginning with Joseph P. Kennedy Sr. and Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy. Their nine children — among them a president, two senators and the founder of the Special Olympics — anchor the second generation; beneath them sit the grandchildren and great-grandchildren who carried the name into the twenty-first century. The chart also follows the Fitzgerald branch: Rose's father, Boston mayor John F. “Honey Fitz” Fitzgerald, and her brothers and sisters.
The interactive chart above is the fastest way in. Click any person to open a card with their dates, role and immediate family; switch between the tree and radial views to see the same 144 people as a branching lineage or as concentric rings of descent; and open a full profile from the card when you want the whole story. Every member has a profile page with a biography, family connections and photographs where we have been able to source them.
The Kennedys are remembered as much for their losses as for their offices. Four of Joe and Rose's nine children died before the age of fifty, and later generations were marked by plane crashes, overdoses and accidents that the press came to call the Kennedy Curse. That history is told in full in our feature article; here, each death is recorded on the profile of the person it touched and marked with a ✝ in the directory below. A complete list of family deaths by year is on our Kennedy family deaths page.
