Early Life and Marriage

Virginia Joan Bennett was born on September 2, 1936, in New York City and grew up in Bronxville, the daughter of an advertising executive. A gifted pianist and, in her college years, a fashion model, she met Edward Kennedy at Manhattanville College, where his sister Jean was an alumna. They married on November 29, 1958, in Bronxville, with Ted's brother John, then a senator, serving as best man.

The couple had three children: Kara (1960–2011), Edward Jr. (born 1961) and Patrick (born 1967). Joan also suffered several miscarriages, and a decade of family catastrophe followed: the assassinations of her brothers-in-law in 1963 and 1968, Ted's near-fatal plane crash in 1964, and the 1969 accident at Chappaquiddick, after which she stood beside him in public while pregnant, and later lost the baby.

Music, Recovery and Later Years

Joan Kennedy was unusually candid, for her era and her family, about her struggle with alcoholism, which she discussed openly from the late 1970s. She campaigned for Ted in his 1980 presidential bid, but the couple separated afterward and divorced in 1982. She rebuilt a life around music, performing as a narrator with orchestras, serving on arts boards, and publishing The Joy of Classical Music in 1992.

She remained close to her children, particularly through Kara's illness and death in 2011 and Patrick's own public recovery. Joan Bennett Kennedy died on October 8, 2025, in Boston, at the age of 89, after a period of declining health from dementia.
