Biography

Birth and Medical Crisis

Patrick Bouvier Kennedy was born on August 7, 1963, at Otis Air Force Base Hospital on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, five and a half weeks premature — the third surviving child of President John F. Kennedy and First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy. Within hours of delivery, Patrick was diagnosed with hyaline membrane disease (now called infant respiratory distress syndrome), a condition in which the lungs of premature infants lack sufficient surfactant to remain fully inflated, causing progressive respiratory failure.

Death and Medical Legacy

Patrick was transferred by helicopter to Boston Children's Hospital, where physicians placed him in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber in an effort to force oxygen into his collapsing lungs. President Kennedy flew to Boston and spent hours at his infant son's bedside. Despite the best available medical care, Patrick died on August 9, 1963, just 39 hours and 12 minutes after birth — the shortest-lived of JFK's children. He was 38 years old when he lost his son.

The high-profile case drew national attention to hyaline membrane disease, accelerating research into neonatal respiratory care. The eventual development of synthetic surfactant therapy — now standard treatment — has since saved hundreds of thousands of premature infants worldwide. Patrick and Arabella Kennedy's remains were later reinterred at Arlington National Cemetery alongside their father.

Family Context

Frequently Asked Questions

How long did Patrick Bouvier Kennedy live?

Patrick Bouvier Kennedy lived for 39 hours and 12 minutes. He was born prematurely on August 7, 1963, and died on August 9, 1963, from hyaline membrane disease, a lung condition common in premature infants.

Did Patrick Kennedy's death have any lasting impact?

Yes. The national attention generated by Patrick's death accelerated research into neonatal respiratory disease. The increased focus on hyaline membrane disease contributed to medical advances, including the later development of synthetic surfactant therapy, which has significantly improved survival rates for premature infants worldwide.
